Within the computer crimes investigation community, it’s no surprise that foreign actors are trying to access local government networks, files and other digital assets. Wisconsin may seem to be an unlikely target for intrusions, credential harvesting, spearphishing attempts and compromise, but we’d be wise to make sure we are protected because intrusions have actually happened.
Local governments (and businesses as well) can take advantage of the State of Wisconsin Security Analysts – the Department of Administration’s Bureau of Security, if asked, will conduct a free vulnerability scan using standard tools that will show what is exposed on your systems. This is a great resource- it’s free, done by experts and you can liken it to the 21-point checkup you get when you go for an oil change. You’ll know about potential problems, but it’s up to you to find the mechanic to address them when you’re ready.
